31st March 1492 - Ferdinand and Isabella expel Jews from Spain

534 years ago today, Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile signed an edict ordering the expulsion of Jews from Spain, in one of the most consequential acts of religious policy in European history. The decree, often known as the Alhambra Decree, followed the completion of the Reconquista with the fall of Granada earlier that year.

The monarchs sought to enforce religious unity within their kingdoms, insisting that all subjects be Roman Catholic. Jews were given the choice to convert to Christianity or leave Spain, leading to the exile of tens of thousands who refused to abandon their faith.

Many Jewish families were forced to sell their possessions quickly and depart under difficult conditions, scattering across the Mediterranean, North Africa, and the Ottoman Empire. Those who converted, known as conversos, often continued to face suspicion and persecution.
