Today in History - 1st April1st April 1979 - Iranian Islamic Revolution is formally complete47 years ago today, the Iranian Islamic Revolution reached its formal conclusion, as Iran was officially declared an Islamic Republic following a national referendum. The result confirmed the end of the monarchy and the establishment of a new political system. The revolution had unfolded over the previous year, driven by widespread opposition to the rule of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi. Economic grievances, political repression, and religious opposition contributed to mass protests that ultimately forced the Shah to leave the country in January 1979. In February, Ruhollah Khomeini returned from exile and emerged as the central figure of the revolution. His supporters established a new government based on Islamic principles, replacing the previous secular monarchy. The referendum of 1st April saw an overwhelming vote in favour of creating an Islamic Republic. This marked the definitive end of the revolution and the beginning of a new era in Iranian history, with lasting political and international consequences.
