The result confirmed the end of the monarchy and the establishment of a new political system. The revolution had unfolded over the previous year, driven by widespread opposition to the rule of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi. Economic grievances, political repression, and religious opposition contributed to mass protests that ultimately forced the Shah to leave the country in January 1979. In February, Ruhollah Khomeini returned from exile and emerged as the central figure of the revolution. His supporters established a new government based on Islamic principles, replacing the previous secular monarchy. The referendum of 1st April saw an overwhelming vote in favour of creating an Islamic Republic.
