Today in History - 30th March30th March 1981 - Ronald Reagan seriously injured in shooting45 years ago today, Ronald Reagan was shot in an assassination attempt in Washington, D.C., just weeks after taking office as the 40th President of the United States. The attack occurred outside the Washington Hilton Hotel after Reagan had delivered a speech. The gunman, John Hinckley Jr., fired six shots toward the president as he left the building. Reagan was struck by a bullet that ricocheted off the presidential limousine, puncturing a lung and causing serious internal bleeding, while three others—including Press Secretary James Brady—were also seriously wounded. Hinckley’s motive was highly unusual: he was obsessed with actress Jodie Foster and believed that carrying out the attack would impress her. He was arrested at the scene and later found not guilty by reason of insanity, leading to his confinement in a psychiatric hospital for decades. Reagan survived after emergency surgery and made a strong recovery, returning to work within weeks. Hinckley remained under institutional care until being gradually released under strict conditions in the 2010s, while the incident led to lasting changes in security and gun laws in the United States.
