29th March 1975 - US forces evacuate Saigon

51 years ago today, American forces completed the evacuation of Saigon, marking the end of direct U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. The evacuation, known as Operation Frequent Wind, took place as North Vietnamese forces closed in on the city.

As the situation deteriorated, thousands of American personnel and South Vietnamese civilians were airlifted from the U.S. embassy and other locations by helicopter. Chaotic scenes unfolded as desperate crowds gathered, hoping to escape before the city fell.

Later that day, North Vietnamese tanks entered Saigon, and the government of South Vietnam collapsed. The city was soon renamed Ho Chi Minh City, symbolising the victory of the communist North.

The evacuation became one of the most iconic images of the war’s end. It marked not only the fall of Saigon but also the conclusion of a long and deeply controversial conflict that had shaped global politics for two decades.
