16th April 1746 - Jacobites defeated at Battle of Culloden

280 years ago today, the Battle of Culloden was fought, marking the decisive end of the Jacobite Rising of 1745. Government forces under Prince William Augustus Duke of Cumberland defeated the army of Charles Edward Stuart, better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, on Culloden Moor near Inverness.

The Jacobite forces, largely composed of Highland clans, had marched deep into England in an attempt to restore the Stuart monarchy. However, they were forced to retreat back into Scotland, where they faced a well-trained and better-equipped government army.

The battle itself was short but brutal. The Jacobites launched a direct charge across open, marshy ground under heavy artillery and musket fire, suffering devastating losses within a short period of time.

Culloden was the last pitched battle fought on British soil. In its aftermath, the British government imposed harsh measures to suppress Highland culture and prevent further rebellion, bringing an end to the Jacobite cause as a serious political threat.
